Nearly $15,000 stolen from burned out NYC apartments

Burglars stole nearly $15,000 worth of electronics and jewelry from a Bronx housing project soon after a fire tore through the building — killing a 6-year-old boy, police sources said Sunday.

Aiden Hayward and his 32-year-old father were found unconscious in a hallway on the 19th floor of the building in NYCHA’s Mitchel Houses Friday evening.

Aiden, who suffered smoke inhalation, was taken to Harlem Hospital but could not be saved. His father, who also suffered smoke inhalation, was clinging to life at the same hospital, police said.

Soon after residents cleared out of the building on East 135th Street, multiple calls about a burglary were made to 911, the sources said.

“After the fire, someone went in and burglarized the place,” a police source said. “Nothing like having your house burned out and then your stuff stolen.”

The source said about $14,000 worth of electronics and jewelry were swiped. The cause of the fire was still unknown Sunday morning, cops said.

The boy’s father remained in critical condition.

Some residents blamed a broken trash compactor — which appeared to have been ripped out of the wall, leaving an uncovered open space in the hallway — for sparking the blaze.

Aiden was the second child to die in a fire in the five boroughs in just over a week.
